Toronto Pearson Security: Opening Times, Wait Times and Fast Lanes

An early flight out of Pearson is mostly about timing: when the checkpoint opens, which line you can use, and how long it is right now. This guide covers all three for Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, plus what changes when your flight goes to the US. What time does security open at Pearson?

Both terminals open security at the same time. For US flights, you clear Canadian security first and then go to the US customs hall in the same terminal.

Pearson security wait times: how to check them

Pearson shows live wait times for each checkpoint on the Departures section of its website. Check it twice: once before you leave home, and again on the way. A line that looks short at 3:30 am can grow quickly once the first wave of morning flights starts checking in.

• Know your terminal first. Wait times are listed by terminal, so confirm whether your airline uses Terminal 1 or Terminal 3. Our Pearson terminal pillars guide shows where cars stop at each one.
• Holiday weeks and long weekends bring more early departures, so allow extra time even if the live number looks low the night before.
• Checked bags add a step. Bag drop comes before security, and its line is separate from the security wait time.

Fast lanes at Pearson security

Pearson runs three dedicated security lines. Each one is for a specific group of travellers.

Trusted Traveller lane (NEXUS and Global Entry)

If you hold NEXUS or Global Entry, use the Trusted Traveller line at security. For US flights, NEXUS cardholders also have a dedicated line at US customs.

Family and Special Assistance lane

American Express Priority Security Lane

Holders of eligible American Express cards can use a priority lane in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. You request one-time QR codes for yourself and your travel companions through your American Express online account, then scan them at the priority lane gate. Eligible cards include the Platinum Card, Business and Corporate Platinum, the Aeroplan Reserve, Business Reserve and Corporate Reserve cards, the Centurion Card and the Air Canada card. What about YYZ Express?

Pearson introduced YYZ Express as a free way to reserve a security time for domestic and international departures. It was not offered for flights to the US. Pearson no longer has a dedicated YYZ Express page and its security page now lists only the three lanes above, so check Pearson’s website or app before you count on it.

Flying to the US from Pearson

US-bound passengers go through two checkpoints before the gate: Canadian security screening, then US Customs and Border Protection in the preclearance hall. Because customs only opens at 3:30 am, arriving much earlier than that for a 6:00 am US flight will not get you to the gate sooner.

• Use the Mobile Passport Control app. US Customs and Border Protection’s free app lets you submit your information before you reach the officer.
• NEXUS and mobility lines. NEXUS cardholders and passengers using wheelchairs or with mobility needs can use a dedicated line at US customs by showing a boarding pass with a NEXUS card or customs declaration.
• Allow for both lines. Plan for the security wait and the customs wait, not just one of them.

Planning a 6:00 am flight from Pearson

For a sunrise departure, work backwards from your airline’s check-in cut-off. A common rule of thumb is to reach the terminal about 2 hours before a domestic flight and about 3 hours before a US or international flight, but your airline’s own advice always comes first.

1. The night before: check in online, confirm your terminal, and put your ID, passport or NEXUS card where you will not forget it.
2. Before you leave: look at Pearson’s live wait times and check for overnight road closures on your route.
3. At the terminal: drop bags first if you have them, then go straight to security. For US flights, head to customs as soon as you clear security.

Getting through the scanner faster

• Liquids: check the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) website for the current liquids and restricted items rules before you pack.
• Electronics: enhanced screening of devices is random. Keep laptops and tablets charged and easy to reach, and be ready to take them out of their cases.
• Coats and pockets: take off heavy outerwear and empty your pockets into your bag while you wait in line, not at the bin.
